Do you have Diabetes?
17 million people in the United States - one in twelve people over the age of 20 - are estimated to have diabetes (NHANES*). Of these, 5.9 million people have not been diagnosed and do not know that they are diabetic. The likelihood of having diabetes increases with age.
- 12 % of Americans aged 45 to 64 have diabetes
- 22 % of Americans aged 65 to 74 have diabetes
- 18% of Americans over the age of 75 have diabetes
Significant risk factors for diabetes include being overweight, obesity, inadequate physical activity, a family history of diabetes, poor diet, and increasing age.
Diabetes may double or quadruple your chance of dying of cardiovascular disease (stroke or heart attack). It is the leading cause of kidney failure and blindness in working-aged adults. It is also and the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations.
The Long Beach Center for Clinical Research (LBCCR) conducts clinical trials of new treatments for diabetes and offers free screening for diabetes. Make an appointment to have your blood sugar checked as part of a free health screening at LBCCR.
