What is metabolic syndrome?
Metabolic syndrome is diagnosed when patients have 3 of 5 high risk conditions: high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, abdominal obesity (waist larger than 36 inches in women or 39 inches in men) and abnormal cholesterol levels: triglyceride level greater than 150 and/or high density lipoprotein (HDL) less than 40 in men or less than 50 in women.
